HCC congratulates
both the Vocal FX chorus
and the Musical Island Boys
quartet in placing 10th in their respective Open Competitions in the 2009
International Barbershop Convention in Anaheim, California and to Pacific
Flavours Quartet for placing 14th in the International Collegiate Competition.

These are amazing results and what's more they ALL come from the Wellington
area.

The Harbour Capital Chorus was the NZABS 5th placed Chorus for
2007 (no NZ competitions in 2008). Our very own "Fusion" quartet was placed third in the 2007 NZABS Quartet
Competition. We all enjoy singing in that
special form of a-cappella music called “Barbershop”.
What is Barbershop?
Technically speaking, Barbershop harmony is a style of unaccompanied singing
with three voices harmonising to the melody. The lead usually sings the melody,
with the tenor harmonising above the lead. The bass sings the lowest harmonising
notes and the baritone provides in-between notes, either above or below the lead
to make chords (specifically, dominant-type or "Barbershop" sevenths)
that give Barbershop its distinctive, "full" sound.
